SP1 Success with James Legal's Document Migration to Clio
Project Overview
James Legal needed to migrate 17 years’ worth of critical data from their previous CMS to Clio, ensuring that all documents and transactional data were accurately transferred and retained for legal compliance. This included a significant volume of data — 2.7 million documents, over 2TB of data. The key goals were to consolidate all data into one platform, enhance accessibility, and improve efficiency for the firm.
Their Challenge
The main challenges James Legal faced were twofold. The first was the migration of historical financial data, which wasn’t covered in Clio’s standard migration process. They needed this data uploaded via spreadsheets to each matter, which required a tailored solution. The second challenge was the sheer volume of data — 2.7 million documents and over 2TB.
Given the scale of this migration, SP1 IT Solutions had to act quickly to manage the process and resolve any issues along the way. One of the hurdles encountered was the transfer of about 2,000 documents that wouldn’t transfer via FTP. Fortunately, SP1’s proactive approach and early start allowed the team to address these issues without impacting the migration timeline.

Our Solution
SP1 IT Solutions took a proactive and tailored approach to ensure the migration process ran smoothly. Vin Chauhan worked closely with James Legal from the outset, advising on the best method for transferring data, including using FTP for certain data and liaising with their external IT provider. The migration itself was carefully planned and executed, with regular progress updates to ensure everything was proceeding as expected.
SP1’s ongoing communication and support throughout the process were key in ensuring the migration was completed on time and without major disruptions. The team was able to successfully migrate all 2.7 million documents, including the historical financial data, ensuring everything was in place and easily accessible for James Legal.
